RULES
1. Your entry for the class must be in 100% traditional media. This includes but is not limited to pencils, pens, paint and pastels. Entries should be photographed/scanned (if you need tips on the best way to do this, message me) and can have minor editing digitally to look like the original artwork (ie cropping, contrast, curves etc).
2. If you would like to create extra images these do NOT need to be traditionally created. Byt why not try sketching or lining your image traditionally then colouring it digitally?
3. Extra images are not mandatory but always lovely to see.
4. A horse may only enter each discipline once, however, there is no limit on the number of entries per artist due to the mixed levels.
9. Entries should be posted in the comments of THIS journal. Please list the class you are entering and the LEVEL in case the class is split.

LOCATION
This show is held at Oak Brooke Stables, based in the very north of Scotland. If you would like to google our location to get a better sense of scenery and to appreciate the beautiful beach a stone's throw away from our doorstep, please google 'Armadale, Sutherland'. We are set across the road from the beach, set back into the landscape. Our facilities also have a small loch named Lochan Bruth which is located next to a woodland area; both which are utilised in the cross country. I'm not going to be too fussy on complete accuracy, but points will be rewarded to those who have captured the essence of this landscape. This show takes place at the end of spring. There will be many sheep, lambs, cows and calves about. Plants in bloom includes gorse, and the heather and shrubbery are beginning to bear bright leaves.
WEATHER
Sunrise begins: 4:30am
Sunset begins: 9:30pm
Thursday
A truly beautiful day, reaching a high of 15 degrees celsius with very minimal wind. A slight mist lies over the sea in the morning, but this dissipates by noon. The day gives way to a clear and still night, with a beautiful sunset.
Friday
The wind turns to the east and the rain starts coming down in sheets. A gusting wind of 30mph will make this a challenging day on the cross country course, but the footing is generally good just getting muddier throughout the day. A high of 10 degrees but the wind chill brings it down to 5 degrees. A sea mist blows off the ocean and onto the beach. A dark and wild night ensues.
Saturday
The wind still remains from Friday, but the rain has dissipated just leaving moody grey skies, the sun trying to break through. A high of 11 degrees as the wind settles throughout the day.
CLASS INFORMATION
CLASSES MAY BE SPLIT BY LEVEL DEPENDING ON ENTRY NUMBERS
Dressage
General Information
- Riders must wear formal attire
- Horses' manes should be braided and they should be turned out to a high standard
Location
The arena has been set up on the left-hand side of the loch, just off the edge of the map. This means the loch plus forest is visible. To the other side are some paddocks, but as the land gets higher this turns to moorland, landscape typical for the location. The dressage fence is white, and like this. The letters are displayed on white flowerpots like this, with yellow/orange flowers and green foliage. The footing is grass.
- No previous experience required for horses
- Please keep the tack appropriate for the level you are depicting, ie. no double bridles and spurs for novice horses.
-Riders may wear crash helmets only, no tophats
- No whips or polo wraps
- Any movement from modern dressage tests can be depicted, including halt and salute
Show Jumping
General Information

- Horses should be well turned out, braiding optional.
- Jumps are to be set at a height suitable for the horse/rider combination
Location
The arena has been set up on the left hand side of the loch, just off the edge of the map. This means the loch plus forest is visible. To the other side are some paddocks, but as the land gets higher this turns to moorland, landscape typical for the location. The arena is grass footed and marked with white temporary fencing like this (not the dressage fencing, but the simple rail fencing behind it). Spectators can watch from behind this fencing, standing only.
Requirements
- Horses must be aged 3 or over
- No previous experience required for horses
- Martingale/breastplate and leg protection recommended

The Jumps
For this competition I am not providing any set jumps, therefore you are free to let your creative juices flow! Ideally jumps should be based around Scotland and springtime. If you have any questions about jump design feel free to shoot me a message.
3-Day Eventing
This eventing competition is going to run a bit different, but hopefully this will come as a relief to most! This eventing competition only requires ONE image. This image can of any of the 3 phases. Information for the dressage and show jumping phases are the same as the individual competitions. The cross country information will be posted below.
XC for the 3-Day Eventers
General Information
- Riders may wear any colours they want, but must wear a body protector/air jacket and crash helmet
- Horses should be well turned out. Mane braiding optional
- Please adjust jump heights to meet the horse/rider level
Location
The XC track takes place all around OBS stables, with a loop out to the beach and then back. There are jumps located in the shallows of the loch and also in the small forest behind the loch as well as in the open countryside/moorland. The course is laid out using the typical white rope and posts seen on most courses.
The Jumps
You are completely free to design your own jump, ideally with a Scottish or rustic theme.
JUDGING
Judging for SJ, dressage and 3DE is effort based.
I will be taking into account your previous experience with traditional media, and before judging each entry I will have a look at your gallery. This is just to get a rough idea about how established you are as a traditional artist, NOT to judge your entry against your gallery. The aim of this show is to have fun and not worry about placings!
