3 weeks had passed since the accident. Nightmares about the accident woke Elly in the middle of the night, usually screaming or crying out for help. When daylight broke the heavy bags under her eyes became apparent, from all the sleepless nights and exhaustion.
Elly was getting better at wheeling herself about in the chair, as well as moving between things like from her bed to her chair in the morning. Like she used to, she’d go and sort out feed at the break of dawn, but she could no longer deliver the buckets to the stables or let the horses in from the field. She was so glad Seb was still here. Tensions were high in regards to Olly. After their first awkward meeting at the stables Elly found it hard to talk to him out of sheer embarrassment. Olly would come to Elly and ask her questions about horses but apart from that they hardly talked.
Every day Elly wheeled herself past Ocean, pacing in her stable, she didn’t know what to do with her. Since the accident she hadn’t been ridden, she wouldn’t let Olly ride her in fear that he would be thrown off too. Perhaps she should ask Olly to start lunging her? She sighed and carried on until she got to Rain’s stable. She unhooked the door and slid it across to find her big dappled mare standing staring at her. She really missed riding; it was like second nature to her. Some days she could be out ten times exercising horses but now she couldn’t. She rolled herself in and Rain gave her an inquisitive look, lowering her neck down to Elly in her chair. Elly stretched her arm out and patted her head, the corner of her mouth forming a faint, distant smile.
“I will ride again,” she whispered to the mare. “I will.”
