Oh the joys of the inspections. They’re very important for the horses’ welfare but also a pain to coordinate. It was hard as they’d decided to take 6 horses with them, with only three staff members. ‘How is that awkward?’ You may ask, well. When you’re standing waiting for your turn all is well as you have one person per two horses. The problem arises when one person has to take one of the horses up to be inspected. This results in one of the handlers holding three horses, which when one decides to act up, can be disastrous. Today was no exception.

Skye was put in charge of leading the horses for their inspection. Snowman was up first with Elly holding Hazel and Reno, the more predictable and calmer horses, leaving Olly with Kit, Rain and Lady, the newest and most skittish of the bunch. Lady had been so unsettled since arriving, only a few hours prior, and was not letting her guard down. Olly thought he’d been very clever by putting polos in his pocket to keep the horses happy, not realising that he’d have no hands to get the mints out of his pocket and feel them to the horses. On the upside, Rain was his new best friend, never more than in inch from his pocket, mouthing at the fabric.

Snowman trotted up quite the thing, taking it all in his stride. The vet was also happy with his general wellbeing so he passed. Skye gave snowman to Elly, taking Hazel who was next up. She passed the inspection along with Reno, Kit and Rain.

It was then Lady’s turn. Whilst all the other inspections were being carried out she was pacing and doing little rears, certainly keeping Olly on his toes. Skye took her, and walked and trotted her up for the vet to see. She was obviously delighted, throwing her head and trying to have a good romp around just like a foal. Skye then took the mare up to the vet for a closer look.

“How old is she?” the vet asked, feeling down Lady’s legs.

“Around 6, but we don’t know for sure as she was a rescue.” Skye replied

“Right, well, she’s sound, which is always a good thing and has no health reasons why she shouldn’t pass the inspection, despite being a little on the thin side. For this reason she passes the inspection, but in my opinion if she does not settle in the next few days is that you shouldn’t put her under the stress of the show ring.”

“Right. Yes, she is very agitated at the moment. I really hope that we haven’t taken her to show too soon.” Skye said. “She has been coming on in leaps and bounds at home but she does some somewhat distressed here. The chances are that she won’t be shown here but just trained a few times to get her used to some different surroundings and then be taken home here. The last thing we want to do is cause her more stress.”

“That would be advisable, yes. Why don’t you try walking her amongst some of the bustle of the show ground to get her used to it, when she has had a calm day or two?”  the vet suggested.

“Thanks, we will try that and see how things go.”
